By collecting sufficient numbers of DNA samples across a broad geographic area, it is possible to map out genetic variation of a species across distances.
This is similar in concept to the human genographic project, but actually more simple. Whilst humans migrate huge distances, trees remain rooted to the spot. This fact means that we can determine the geographic location of a tree based on its genetic profile.
The DHTT team is still building the first-ever ‘genographic’ tree database – for a particularly vulnerable species of tree. Once complete, we will be able to determine the origin of a wood sample, even one taken from your own home, without reliance on Chain-of-Custody documentation.
